Face – Surgical & Non-surgical Cosmetic Procedures Facelift Information Face lift surgery, also known as facialplasty, rytidoplasty, or cervicofacial rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves repositioning the skin and tightening some of the muscle and tissue of the face and neck to counter signs of aging produced by gravity. The pathogenesis of aging is multifactorial, including hereditary influences with tendency to appear older than one’s age or inherent weakening of ligaments, and or effects of hormonal changes. While a facelift cannot stop the aging process, it may "turn back the clock”, the face appearing younger than one’s actual age. Thus, the ultimate aim of a facelift is to counter sagging and looseness in skin and muscle tissue, making the face appear younger. The surgery will not erase all wrinkles especially around the mouth and eyes. That is why additional procedures are needed to supplement a face lift that includes necklift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), liposuction, autologous fat injection, removal of buccal (cheek) fat pads, forehead lift, and browlift; chemical or laser peel; and malar (cheek), submalar, or chin implants. These procedures may be necessary to achieve the desired results. Recovery time is usually 1 week, and the results last approximately 10 years. Techniques of Facial Surgery: Standard facelift Short scar facelift Foundation facelift or deep-plane facelift There are many techniques or surgical approaches to facelifts. The plastic surgeon will need to assess patients individually to be able to plan as to what type of facelift the patient needs. Factors that will influence decision includes patient age, intensity of jowls, degree of skin laxity and laxity, amount of submental / submandibular fat or bulges in the face, degree of platysma bands on animation, integrity of eye muscles, fat deposits and herniated fat in lower eyelids. All of the results of the examination will be considered in planning how to go about doing the facelift, making sure that your main concerns are covered. What are complications of facelift surgery? Although infrequent, the risks and complications of facelift surgery include: Bleeding, hematoma, bruising Infection Neurological dysfunction (loss of muscle function or sensation), which is usually temporary Widened or thickened scar Loss of hair (around the incision site) Asymmetry (unevenness between two sides) Skin necrosis (loss of skin from tissue death) How to prepare for a facelift Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or any products containing these drugs, as they can cause bleeding problems after surgery. If you are taking them, stop intake for at least 2 weeks before the scheduled consultation. Stop herbal or homeopathic medications as some may also cause bleeding during surgery. Do not smoke as smoking delays healing and increases the risks of complications. Tell your surgeon if you are suffering from any chronic illnesses or any peculiarities as the information will help in planning your surgery, and inform you of any risks, advantages and disadvantages that might not be worth the procedure you are aiming for. This begins with a consultation with the plastic surgeon for initial assessment, pre-operative examination, and to develop plan of surgery.
